start of semester
1. How do you envision using art in your classroom?
I envision using art in my classroom in as many ways as possible. I believe that the imagination is powerful and moving. I hope that by inspiring my students to use their imagination, they will enhance and embellish their thinking, understanding, and learning. Art and imagination go hand in hand... art comes from imagination and imagination comes from art. The same can be said for inspiration... art comes from inspiration and inspiration comes from art. By setting up an environment that promotes inspiration and imagination, I hope that my students start to develop their own creativity and artistic expression.
2. What do you know about integrated learning / integration?
I do not know much about integrated learning/integration beyond the idea that they involve incorportating multiple disciplines to enhance learning. I am looking forward to learning how to integrate art into my other subjects because I believe that art and creativity can strengthen the value and memorability of what is learned.
3. Rate your comfort level in making art, and discuss.
Uneasy 1 2 3 4 5 Comfortable
5: I love making art. I find it therapeutic as well as expressive. To me, making art is a way to share my ideas, thoughts, passions, understandings, and the list goes on and on... I believe that by making art, we are able to convey something personal but that can also be interpreted by others in their own personal ways. Art is unique but universal. Nothing in art is ever exactly the same but all art has the ability to speak volumes to those who listen.
4. Rate your comfort level in analyzing and talking about art, and discuss.
Uneasy 1 2 3 4 5 Comfortable
3: I respect the idea that everyone interprets art differently. No two people look at the same painting or hear the same song and get the exact same thing out of it. To me art is a window into something more and everyone sees something unique but equally beautiful. With that being said, I think a lot can be said about the way you go about looking at, talking aobut, and analyzing art that will help you better understand the artist's intent, inspiration, and use of imagination to create, and that is what I am looking forward to learning this semester.

end of semester
1. How do you envision using art in your classroom?
Throughout this semester, I have learned so many techniques for integrating art into my classroom. Art can be used to demonstrate understanding as an assessment tool or a strategy to promote deeper thinking through visual representation of concepts being learned. I still think that setting up an environment where art is welcome and encouraged is crucial to effectively integrate art into my classroom because having the supplies that students need to feed their creativity is the catalyst for their artistic development.
2. What do you know about integrated learning / integration?
I know how to effectively and creatively integrate various disciplines with each other, to include art and music. At the beginning of the semester, I had little to no idea how to integrate content areas and what that was supposed to look like, but now I have a deeper understanding of the importance of integration and how to do so to benefit and enhance my students' learning.
3. Rate your comfort level in making art, and discuss.
Uneasy 1 2 3 4 5 Comfortable
5: Still a 5. I still love making art and getting creative. I love crafting, drawing, painting, taking pictures... I love it all. I think art is relaxing and healing. I believe that art is one of the most effective ways for me to express my thoughts, feelings, ideas, and emotions (to name a few things). I now know the developmental benefits of creating art and how it can be utilized in the classroom to enhance student learning and it is exciting to add an additional use for creating art to my reasons for loving it!
4. Rate your comfort level in analyzing and talking about art, and discuss.
Uneasy 1 2 3 4 5 Comfortable
4: I feel more comfortable talking about art than I did at the beginning of the semester because my views on everyone's views and interpretations being unique was reinforced and ultimately encouraged... That's what makes talking about art so interesting. Sharing all of the different ways to see one piece helps an observer to see more and to look harder at the artwork. I really like the Visual Thinking Strategy we used to observe and talk about art and it is something that I am comfortable doing as an observer and leading with my students. As far as analyzing art is concerned, I think that I can do it but I will need support from references. I don't think I am to the point where I can look at a student's art and know where they are in artistic development, but I now know where to go to figure it out, which is still a step in the right direction!
